This week we look at the emergency management of Burns, Poisoning, Allergies and Envemination.
Burn Management needs to consider the depth, location and interference of the burn. Specifically can clothing be removed without exacerbating the wound. Superficial burns should be managed with cold running water. Partial thickness and full thickness burns should be an emergency '000' call.
Poisoning management is subject to the specific poison and the individuals response. I suggest a simultaneous call to the Poisons Hotline '13 11 26' and emergency '000'. In the work place you should consult the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) immediately.
Allergies are often beyond the realm of a Senior First Aider and should be referred on for a more professional consultation. UNLESS anaphylaxis and then obviously is treated on the spot.
Envemination
Know the responses for each of the different types of common bites & stings. Specifically Redback Spider and Brown Snake (Hint, Hint, Nudge, Nudge!).
