Lesson 6 - CPR and the Primary Survey

We started the lesson by disucssuing the realities of responding to a serious emergency situation. Most students acknowledge that if they found a loved one, lieing dead on the floor they would proberbly forget everything. THIS IS TOTALLY NORMAL! Hence why we train CPR to such a depth. If you can remember a few things and focus enough to apply them you have just improved their chance of survival considerably.

The outcome is directly linked to the "Chain of Survival".

This lesson focuses on the first two steps.

Early Access:
This step is simply calling for an ambulance ("000" or "112"). This ensures that advanced emergency care attends as quickly as possible.

Early CPR
By maintaining the flow of oxygenated blood to the central nervous system (CNS) the emergency care provider ensures that the casualty is revivable. Once the CNS has been staved of oxygen for 3 minutes cellular necrosis (cell death) becomes so extensive that sustainable revival becomes too remote. It is important to note that the 3 minutes is not a sum of time without oxygen but a consecutive time frame.
